WHAT IS BOTULINUM TOXIN?
Botulinum Toxin (BTX) is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is very safe and is injected into facial muscles in tiny amounts during treatment. It has been used for over 25 years successfully in the cosmetic industry, as well as being effectively used for the treatment of strabismus (cross-eye) and blepharospasm (lid spasm) since the early eighties.

HOW DOES BOTULINUM TOXIN WORK?
BTX blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the facial muscles that have been injected. The release of acetylcholine (responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that elicit muscle contraction) is blocked by BTX. This makes the muscles less active and thereby softens and smoothes the appearance of persistent lines and wrinkles, or makes them disappear altogether over time. It is the hyperactivity of facial expression muscles that can result in the development of deep frown lines, or simply the aging process. Injecting BTX into the affected area temporarily paralyzes those underlying muscles responsible.

WHEN AND HOW LONG DOES BOTULINUM TOXIN WORK FOR?
The initial effects of treatment become visible in 48-72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks. Your facial expression will become softer and more relaxed but by no means mask-like. The overall result is very natural.
The effect of treatment generally lasts for 4 to 6 months. Re-treatment is then required.

IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?
It is rare for treatment with BTX to be very painful. Most patients experience a feeling of slight discomfort if at all during the treatment itself but that is all. Rest assured we will talk you through what to expect before your first injection so that you will be fully prepared before treatment.

POTENTIAL ADVERSE EFFECTS (SIDE EFFECTS)
Botulinum Toxin injection is generally a safe and effective treatment method. Nevertheless, certain side effects can occur but, like the intended treatment effects, they are mostly reversible.
